Bird notes week 18, 2026

The kākāpō cam came back up for a few days, but it's down again now because it's not getting enough solar power to keep running. It's a shame, because those kākāpō chicks are getting big and busy and fun to watch.

Bald eagle chick lying in nest

Bald eagle Peanut has been hanging out in his nest most days, still. I love when fledglings come home to visit. It's nice to see that they feel safe and comfortable in the nest in-between all their adventures and exploring.

White-tailed eagle feeding two chicks

Both of Milda and Zorro's white-tailed eagle chicks have hatched and seem to be doing well. There's an annoying stick hanging on the side of the nest that makes it hard to see them sometimes, plus the nest bowl is quite deep, but they're big enough to pop their heads up high when they're being fed, so you can definitely spot both of them from time to time.

There's also a golden eagle nest cam in Japan, but the quality isn't great.

Bald eagle with two chicks

Jackie and Shadow's two chicks are big enough to sleep beside Jackie now, rather than fully underneath her.

This black vulture nest in Spain has a new chick now, so that's a new nest to keep an eye on. The cam doesn't run overnight, but it's usually running during our evening here in Australia.

The albatross chick in NZ has had even more beautiful sunsets lately.

Meanwhile, it's definitely owl season in the northern hemisphere. All three of these tawny owl chicks left their nest box this week. But there's another tawny owl live cam here that I enjoyed watching last year. They've got at least two owlets in the nest box already. And this tawny owl nest box in Hungary has two owlets, also.

Tawny owl brooding an owlet

The two barred owlets in this nest box haven't fledged yet, but they're getting close. You can watch the outside cam to see them popping their heads out of the box and standing in the opening. But don't worry—this barred owl nest box has two tiny owlets in it to watch when the other box is empty.

There are also a couple of long-eared owl nests in Hungary with owlets at the moment. This nest box has four owlets, I think, and there are two in this box.
