Bird notes week 19, 2026

The lesser spotted eagle season has kicked off for 2026! These were some of my favourite bird nests to watch last year, so I'm excited that some of them are already incubating again.

Milda and Madis have already laid an egg. Their chick from last year featured in Josh's game Bird Island, along with Grieta, whose nest is still empty, and Reinis, whose nest has been taken over by a common buzzard couple this year. There's also an egg already in this nest, and one here.

Jackie and Shadow's chicks were given names this week: Sandy (chick 1) and Luna (chick 2).

Kākāpō chick

The kākāpō cam has been back up for a couple of days, so we can see how big the chicks have become. They're very curious and starting to explore outside the nest now.

There's a new live cam from Taiwan with tawny fish owl chicks, though they're not far off leaving the nest. One has already migrated to a higher spot in their tree.
