Week 19, 2026

A few non-bird notes this week, but also some bird updates.

Two golden eagle chicks
These golden eagle chicks are just tiny white balls of fluff right now.
Golden eagle chick and an unhatched egg
In this second golden eagle nest, only one egg has hatched so far.

Two golden eagle nests have hatched chicks this week. One still has an unhatched egg, but it's looking less likely it will ever hatch now. The other has two chicks.

White-tailed eagle chick being fed by its parent

Another white-tailed eagle nest has a new chick, also. This nest had one chick last year called Sarday, who fell off the side of the nest a little before he was ready to fledge, and spent some time on a lower branch of the tree, where the stream picked up the sound of him sneezing and calling for food sometimes. Eventually he fledged from that branch and even came back to visit the nest occasionally. Hopefully there'll be less drama this year.

Two bald eagle chicks and their parents in the nest
Sibling rivalry between Sandy and Luna has given way to curiosity and cuddles when it's cold, now that they're old enough for the hierarchy to be established

Milda and Zorro's white-tailed eagle chicks are doing well, getting bigger all the time and not fighting too much. Same with Sandy and Luna, Jackie and Shadow's chicks. Those two are a bit older than the white-tailed eagles, and are getting more curious and exploring a little more lately—picking up twigs and feathers and moving things around in the nest.

A group of cygnets in a nest

I love how cygnets and ducklings ride on their parents' backs

There are also some new cygnets to watch on this live swan nest cam in England. And two chicks have hatched so far in this buzzard nest.

In non-bird news, I've been listening to Noah Kahan's new album, The Great Divide non-stop since it came out a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to wear it out at this rate, but I've had his previous album, Stick Season, on high rotation for years, so I'm just swapping one for the other, I guess. I was hanging out for the release, and on first listen I wasn't sure I liked it as much as Stick Season, but after a couple more spins it's definitely grown on me.

Josh updated the site for our API docs for Larder this week. We've both been working on updating the Larder mobile apps lately, so we've been using the docs more heavily and caught a few minor typos to fix, but now they've got a new layout as well.

I found this repo a few weeks ago with fonts that have been specially edited to work better on e-reader screens. There's a bunch of nice serif fonts in the repo to try out, so if you're looking for some variety for your e-books, I recommend taking a look. I pretty much always end up using Source Serif Pro, but it's nice to try something different occasionally, and both Newsreader and Literata are nice alternatives.
