Recent thoughts on Android vs. iOS

My last post about using Android vs. iOS was about 18 months ago. It feels like time for an update.
At the end of 2017, after having my Google Pixel for just over a year, I switched to an iPhone X. As an iOS developer, I felt my work was better when I used my own apps every day, and I'd long despised the physical iPhone home button, which the X did away with.

I love Xcode's docs pop-ups. I love AppCode's line guides. I love that AppCode suggests a method implementation when I call a method I haven't written yet. I love how Xcode tells me the parameters of a method as I'm calling it. They both have strengths, is all I'm saying.

I had some trouble figuring out how to handle multiple images sent to Pico from other Android apps so I wrote up how it works on the Hello Code blog.

Exciting stuff coming in the next version of Pico so far: thumbnail previews for images, support for sending images (multiple if you want!) and text (incl. links!) to Pico from other apps, and support for displaying multiple images in a post.

Of course, the downside of having a script run automatically to update my Pelican blog is that when I mess up dates and times of posts, Micro.blog ends up showing them over and over. Sorry!

Swift/Kotlin devs (and users of other languages I don't know of where this is relevant): what's your opinion on multiple classes per file? I've fallen into the habit of doing this really often lately.

I love that having an automated script running every 15 minutes to update my Pelican blog means I can make little edits and not have to manually re-build the blog each time. So much easier this way.

I've been on a side project binge lately. Another one I'm working on is an iOS client for an open-source to-do list project I'm building with Josh. I've mainly just been playing around with design ideas so far. These are some of my favourites, though I'm not quite convinced by any of them yet.

Josh recently wrote this great post about why we prefer being indie to being in the VC-backed startup game, and why we hope others will do this more in future, too.

Wait... did Xcode finally add blank space at the end of files without making us hit enter a bunch of times? How did I not hear about this!

Before I switched to using Android daily I was working on expense app for iOS. It's not finished yet, but here's a quick look at it so far:

Playing around with an idea for a new Android app today. I miss using Bear when I'm not on iOS, so thinking about building a replacement.

To follow up from yesterday's post about iOS testing frameworks, today I wrote about how I use Sencha & EarlGrey for functional UI testing.

Pretty disappointed that Shortcuts didn't fix the glaring error in Workflow that you can't send a top-level JSON array. It's normal for this to be an API requirement & frustrating that it's impossible!

Our internet went down for ~10 seconds when I was 2/3 hours into downloading Xcode 10. Now I have to start over. 😩

It took some fiddling, but I've got a really minimal look to Android Studio now, and I love it.

I've been on a side project binge lately. My latest effort is an Android client for Micro.blog called Pico. I've been using Micro.blog more lately and also using Android for my phone. Micro.blog is an Apple-heavy community from what I can tell, so there are no first-party Android apps for Micro.blog. There is already a third-party app, but it doesn't let you compose new posts yet.

Our Samoyed puppy, Jez (short for Jeremy), is now 7 months old. We picked him up at 2 months old (8 weeks). I've never raised a puppy before, so I did a lot of research before we got one, but there was a lot I missed. I've since learned a lot about puppies I didn't know, and wanted to share some of our experience. There's not really a good way to structure this into a narrative, so it's just a big list of thoughts on various puppy-related topics.
