Android P

I've been running Android P for a while now on my original Google Pixel. I ran the beta for a few weeks, and switched to using my Pixel as my main phone around the time P was officially released.
Here are some of the good and bad things I've noticed about it.

Note: I wrote this a few years ago for a company I was working for. I still think it's one of the best things I ever wrote, and wanted to share it again, here.
It's around 3pm on Sunday afternoon when I slam closed my paperback copy of Stephen King's oft-recommended writing guide, On Writing. I don't have a problem dog-earing a book or bending its pages—I learned to love books and reading from my dad, who often battered a book before reading it to give it that "lived-in feel"—but I can't bring myself to throw one across the room. I briefly entertain the idea but settle for the satisfaction of removing my bookmark, signalling its new state of abandonment, as I proclaim, "I can't read any more! I hate Stephen King!"

I've been working on this post since June. Now that it's August, it barely counts as a mid-year review.
Anyway, let's take a look at my 2018 goals. I only set two big goals for 2018:

Whenever I read about people's favourite productivity tips or hacks, or how much time they spend with their productivity system, I'm relieved to have left all that behind. My number one tip about productivity is to find work you love, and stop needing to think about productivity at all. (I realise this is an incredibly privileged position to hold, and feel grateful that I'm able to do so, while understanding not everyone can.) Read more...18 Jun 2018 14:10

Today it's one week since I gave up caffeine. I had mild headaches for about 3 days, and struggled to wake up for about 5 days. Four days in I wanted to give up but I'm glad I didn't! Read more...I tried to write a 7-day email course in 7 days. Here's what happened.

Early in December I took some time off from my job at Ghost to recover from shingles. In case you haven't heard about shingles, it's basically an adult version of chicken pox, and usually affects older people with compromised immune systems. It comes with a rash, and severe nerve pain that can last for weeks, or even months. For the first week I had shingles I spent most of my time lying immobile on my side, as that was the only position I could find that didn't leave me in agonising pain. I could only be upright for 15 minutes or so before the pain set in, and after that it would just build and build until I could lie on my side again and wait for it to pass.

One of my goals for 2016 is to find a sport or exercise I enjoy doing. I've been running on and off for the past couple of years, but I find it so boring that I keep giving up. Rather than pushing myself to do something I don't want to, I've been looking for a fun way to get more exercise.

Stuff I didn't see mentioned at WWDC this year that would be nice:
- I paid $1500 for an iPhone X 6 months ago, and yet the camera app regularly freezes—often while recording a video. How about a fix for that?
- How about improving third-party keyboard which are still janky as ever?
- Faster processing of builds in iTunes Connect would be nice
- Wireless debugging on device is really awesome, except it barely works. How about the new version of Xcode doesn't keep losing its connection to my iPhone, so I have to carry the cable around anyway?

Last night I watched an episode of *Stories from Norway: The Musical* with trepidation, but I needn't have been worried. It was excellent. Hilarious jokes, well-crafted musical numbers, recent Scandinavian history, and lots of silliness. It's written by the comedians who created *The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)* as a joke to promote their late-night TV show. They've done a great job. Aspects of a well-known app I like have been blatantly ripped off by a solo dev for an app in another category. I love that an app exists for this other use-case I have with features from the big app I like, but it's hard to feel okay about supporting such obvious copying. Read more...
